There are many ways to sharpen photos and every photographer will have his/her preference based on their experience and results. At MCWare we are no different and have our prefered way which we will cover in this tutorial.
What you will need:
1. The first step to sharpening an photo is to resize the photo to the size you need it. You should never apply the sharpening and then resize the image as the resizing process invloves applying a slight blur.
2. Once the image has been resized, duplicate the layer in Photoshop and change the blend mode of the new layer to overlay.

3. With the new layer selected go to Filter, then Other and select High Pass.
4. Then change the radius of the filter to get the results you require. We find that for an image of around 2000px then a radius of 1.2 works well.

5. Once you are happy with the results then you can save the image to a format that you want.
